What is family breakdown cover?

Family breakdown cover is a type of personal breakdown cover policy that protects you and up to 3 other people you live with under 1 membership, in any vehicle as either drivers or passengers.

If the people you live with are driving to work or getting a lift with a friend, you’ll have peace of mind knowing they’re fully covered.

Having family breakdown cover means:

  • You can add family members, a partner, housemates and even children – including students living elsewhere during term time
  • Everyone on the policy is covered in any vehicle (including cars, motorbikes and vans) whether they’re driving or a passenger
  • You’ll get recovery to a garage if your vehicle can’t be fixed at the roadside
  • Anyone covered under your family breakdown cover policy needs to live at the same address as you

How does family breakdown cover work?

Will personal breakdown cover include my family?

No, personal breakdown cover only covers the individual named on the policy. For family coverage, you need to get a family breakdown cover policy, which covers up to 3 people you live with.

Can I use another family member’s breakdown cover?

No, you cannot use another family member’s breakdown cover if you are not named on their policy. Each member must be covered under the policy to receive assistance. For comprehensive coverage, consider a family breakdown cover policy that covers the people you live with.

Can I add my child to my AA membership?

Yes, you can add your child to your AA membership. With family breakdown cover, you can include children that live at the same address as you, as well as those who live away from home during term time. This means they’ll be covered in any vehicle they’re in, even if they're just a passenger in someone else's car. This cover also applies to young children who aren’t old enough to drive. If you're a Silver Member, your children aged 17 and under are covered at no additional cost.

Can I add a non-family member to my breakdown cover?

Yes, you can add a non-family member to your breakdown cover. Family breakdown cover is designed to be flexible, allowing you to include additional members who live at the same address, regardless of their relationship to you. This means you can add friends, housemates, or other non-family members to your policy.

Once they’re registered on the membership they will become a member. They will be able to log into the app where they can access their membership card and details. They will need to confirm membership number and confirm their home address to receive service.

Are learner drivers also covered?

Learner drivers can be covered under family breakdown cover, if they’re included in the policy. This means that if they experience a breakdown while practicing their driving, they'll get assistance.

Can I use my AA cover for someone else?

Unfortunately, if the person is not on your policy, then they won’t be covered.

How often can I claim on my family breakdown cover?

You can call us out to a breakdown as many times as you need to each year, as long as it’s not a recurring problem with your vehicle (repeat call-outs for the same fault within 28 days will not be covered).

Will my family be covered if we break down in someone else’s car?

Yes, your family members will be covered even if they break down in someone else's car. The cover applies to any vehicle they are driving or traveling in. Your family is protected no matter whose vehicle they are in.

What do I do if my car breaks down?

Follow these four steps if you break down:

1 – Make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.

2 – Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.

3 – Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.

4 – Once you’re safe, give us a call on 03330 046 046. We’ll come and rescue you, even if you’re not a member yet.

If you’re already with us, you can also report a breakdown and pinpoint your location using our app. It's the fastest way to ask us for help and track our arrival.
