Day-trippers, looking to take advantage of the warmest weekend of the year so far, should carefully plan trips around the M25 closure or totally avoid the area if possible, The AA advises.
The M25 section between Junction 8, A217 (Reigate) and Junction 10 (Cobham) will be shut in both directions from 9pm Friday 10 May to 6am Monday 13 May 2024 meaning a 19-mile diversion will be in place using the A3 and the A240, potentially impacting the following:
- Football: Premier League fixtures and women’s FA Cup final
- Attractions, such as Thorpe Park (Junctions 11 and 13), Legoland (northbound/clockwise off M25)
- Trips to the South Coast
- Airport connections: Gatwick and Heathrow
In addition to these closures, traffic volume is expected to increase even further as some of the remaining Premier League fixtures mean Newcastle fans will travel to Brighton whilst Brentford fans head to the South Coast to watch their side take on Bournemouth. Travelling Newcastle fans are advised to go east around the M25 over the Dartford Crossing.
Sunday is also expected to be busy as Wembley Stadium stages the Women’s FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, adding further congestion to the UK’s busiest motorway.
“We advise drivers to plan their journeys accordingly, avoid the west side of the M25 if possible, but if not to expect delays and stick to the detour routes.”
Many families who saw their early May Bank Holiday plans rained off will likely want to make up for lost time by heading to attractions such as Thorpe Park and Legoland – but may face lengthy delays as they navigate the planned M25 closures.
All drivers are advised to stick to the signed diversion routes to avoid any Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges that may usually apply. The Ultra Low Emission Zone will remain in force on all other routes in London across the weekend.
Drivers of over-height vehicles are advised to visit the National Highways website for information on an alternative route.
Chris Wood, AA Patrol of the Year, said: “With an upturn in the weather forecast and numerous sporting events this weekend it’s likely to be incredibly busy in and around London, particularly the M25 Junctions 8 to 10. We advise drivers to plan their journeys accordingly, avoid the west side of the M25 if possible, but if not to expect delays and stick to the detour routes.
“Prepare your vehicle before setting off by checking oil and coolant levels, tyres and make sure you have enough fuel or electric charge to cover the planned diversions. Also, pack plenty of cold drinks and snacks for passengers.
“We advise those using public transport to check rail websites before setting off as some routes and timetables are likely to be affected by industrial action.”
