What is multi-car breakdown cover?

Multi-car breakdown cover, also known as personal breakdown cover, is a policy that covers you in multiple vehicles under one membership. It’s ideal for households with 2 or more cars.

Whether your family members are driving to work or running errands, you’ll have peace of mind knowing all your vehicles are fully covered if the driver or passenger is a member.

Here are some features of multi-car breakdown cover:

  • Cover multiple cars under one convenient membership to reduce paperwork
  • Add more people to your policy with joint or family cover – this can be cheaper than buying multiple individual policies
  • Assistance if a vehicle breaks down 1/4 mile or more away from home
  • Get Roadside Assistance and recovery to the nearest garage if we can't repair your vehicle on the spot

Our multi-car breakdown cover

Our starting level of multi-car breakdown cover, Roadside Assistance, gives you 24/7 support and unlimited call-outs in any vehicle for breakdowns more than 1/4 mile from your home. It's a personal policy, so you don't need to add vehicles to your policy or have them registered to the same address.

What types of multi-car breakdown cover are there?

There are 3 types of multi-car or personal breakdown cover, which allow you to create the breakdown policy for your needs and vehicles you own – including cars, vans, motorbikes and electric vehicles (EVs). You can cover just yourself, opt for joint coverage, or include up to 3 other people you live with.

You can however be covered for commercial purposes if you buy Commercial Use with your standard breakdown cover.

Are multi-car cover and family cover the same?

If you’d like to be covered in multiple vehicles, then our policies offering personal cover might suit you. We don't call it multi-car cover, but you'll be covered as a driver or passenger in any vehicle.

If you only want cover for yourself in multiple vehicles, then you can choose cover for you. If you’d like to cover more than 1 person in multiple vehicles, then you might want to choose family breakdown cover.

With family cover, you can add up to 3 other people to your personal cover, as long as everyone lives at the same address. That could include your:

  • Partner
  • Family members
  • Housemates
  • Children – even if they're students temporarily living away from home

Looking for the right cover for you? Read our tips for how to compare breakdown cover.

Can multiple cars have Parts and Garage Cover?

Just let us know which vehicles you want to include.

Am I covered in Europe?

Can I add another car to my breakdown cover?

Can you get breakdown cover for 2 cars?

Yes, you can get breakdown cover for 2 cars by choosing a personal-based breakdown cover policy – like our single, joint or family cover options, depending on how many people you live with that you’d like to cover for the 2 cars.

Can I use my breakdown cover for another car?

Yes, you can use your breakdown cover for another car providing that you’re already on a personal breakdown cover policy. You won’t be able to use your breakdown cover for another vehicle if you’re on a single-vehicle cover policy, but you can always switch to a personal one.

Does breakdown cover include the person or car?

What do I do if my car breaks down?

Follow these four steps if you break down:

1 – Make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.

2 – Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.

3 – Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.

4 – Once you’re safe, give us a call on 03330 046 046. We’ll come and rescue you, even if you’re not a member yet.

If you’re already with us, you can also report a breakdown and pinpoint your location using our app. It's the fastest way to ask us for help and track our arrival.
