COMMERCIAL USE

One policy for your personal and commercial breakdown cover needs

Simply add Commercial Use to your standard breakdown policy for cover in every situation.

What's Commercial Use?

Our standard breakdown policy covers vehicles for private or domestic use. Adding Commercial Use gives you cover for vehicles used to carry equipment, people or goods in return for payment. This means you can cover your private and commercial vehicles under one policy.

Commercial Use is ideal for:

  • Taxi drivers
  • Delivery drivers
  • Couriers
  • Tradespeople
  • Driving instructors

Get Commercial Use

If you’re new to The AA, add Commercial Use to your breakdown policy when you buy online. If you’re already with The AA, simply log in to your account to add Commercial Use.

When do I need Commercial Use?

If you use your vehicle for commercial purposes, you need Commercial Use to be covered in the event of a breakdown.

Commercial purposes include:

  • Carrying items or people for money
  • Delivering or collecting goods
  • Transporting passengers
  • Carrying equipment, tools or materials

Which vehicles are covered?

The following vehicles are eligible for Commercial Use:

  • Taxis, black cabs, minicabs or private hire
  • Delivery or courier vehicles, including motorbikes or mopeds
  • Vehicles used to carry equipment for a trade, e.g., a plumber’s van
  • Driving instructor dual control cars

What’s not covered?

We don’t cover the following vehicles for Commercial Use:

  • Hire or rental vehicles supplied by Onward Travel – these can only be used for domestic purposes
  • Any vehicle being used to move vehicles for trade purposes
  • Vehicles used in sporting events
  • Motorhomes, horseboxes, buses, trucks or any vehicles that weigh over 3.5 tonnes

See our terms and conditions for a full list of exclusions.

Can I add Parts and Garage Cover with Commercial Use?

It depends on what you use your vehicle for.

If you use your vehicle to carry tools or equipment for a trade, you can add Parts and Garage Cover.

But if you use your vehicle to carry goods or people in return for payment, you can’t claim on Parts and Garage Cover.

If you are buying breakdown cover for a taxi, or delivery or courier vehicle, don’t add Parts and Garage Cover.

Need to cover a fleet?

If you want to cover a fleet of vehicles (3 or more vehicles) you’ll need Business Breakdown Cover instead.

Why can’t my commercial vehicle be covered under standard breakdown cover?

Our standard breakdown cover only covers vehicles used for private or domestic purposes, such as commuting to work. So if you use your vehicle as part of your job and need to carry people, goods, tools or equipment, we can't cover your vehicle under a standard policy.

If you use your vehicle for both private or domestic and commercial purposes, Commercial Use is ideal to add on to your standard breakdown cover.

How many vehicles can I cover?

It depends on your cover level.

If you choose vehicle cover, you can only cover one vehicle for Commercial Use on your standard breakdown cover. If you choose personal cover, you can add up to 2 vehicles for Commercial Use.

When does my Commercial Use policy start?
Just like our standard breakdown cover policy, Commercial Use will activate 24 hours after purchase or on your start date.
Does Commercial Use include Accident Assist?
Yes. If you add Commercial Use to your standard breakdown cover policy, you’ll also be able to use Accident Assist on the vehicle you use for commercial purposes.
What happens if I break down without Commercial Use?
If you have a standard breakdown cover policy without Commercial Use, we may not be able to assist you with your commercial vehicle or we may charge a service fee.
Are repeat call-outs and pre-existing faults covered?

We can’t provide you with assistance if we’ve attended your vehicle and you call us out for the same fault within 28 days, unless you can provide proof that a permanent repair has been completed by a garage.

The same restriction applies to both Commercial Use and your standard breakdown policy.

What’s the difference between Commercial Use and Business Breakdown Cover?
If you want to cover a fleet (3 or more vehicles), you'll need Business Breakdown Cover instead.
I have a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) – can it be covered under Commercial Use?
No, if you have a HGV or a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes or wider than 2.55 metres, you need to take out pay as you go truck cover.
