There are 3 DVSA tests which you need to pass to qualify as a driving instructor. Both of our training course options provide a blended approach to complete all 3 parts together, giving you access to a Part Qualified Instructor (PDI) licence before your final Instructional Ability test.
Part 1: Theory and Hazard Perception
You’ll have 1.5 hours to complete 100 multiple choice theory questions. Then half an hour to watch 14 hazard perception videos to spot the developing hazards as soon as they appear.
To pass the multiple-choice test, you must get both: an overall score of at least 85 out of 100 at least 20 out of 25 in each of the 4 categories.
To pass the hazard perception test, you need to score at least 57 out of 75. You must pass both tests to pass Part 1.
Part 2: Driving Ability
You’ll complete an advanced practical driving test, demonstrating expert-level driving skills and strong Highway Code knowledge. It lasts an hour and covers 5 parts: eyesight check, vehicle safety, general driving ability, manoeuvres, and independent driving.
To pass your Part 2 Driving Ability Test you need to make: no more than 6 driving faults no serious or dangerous faults
Part 3: Instructional Ability
You’ll give a real 1-hour lesson where you’ll be tested on 17 areas of competence, grouped into 3 categories: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching and learning strategies. After the lesson, the examiner will discuss your performance, give you your result and your completed Part 3 test report.
To pass you need to get either a grade A or B. If you pass the Part 3 test, you can apply for your first ADI badge within 12 months of passing the test. If you don’t pass, you can take the test again within 2 years of passing your Part 1 test.
