Boiler care in summer

Your boiler works just as hard in the summer

It’s a myth that our boilers work overtime in winter and have a nap in summer.

Hotter weather means we’re taking more showers every day, clocking up more a week than in spring and autumn. But is using more hot water in summer putting a silent strain on our boilers?

 Shower
How many showers are we taking?

Almost one in five of us shower more than once a day in the summer, compared to just one in ten in the winter, reveals recent research carried out by ADEY Professional Heating Solutions. This means we’re twice as likely to have a second shower in summer.

There are a few reasons for this, for instance soaring temperatures or taking part in outdoor activities. Research showed that a third of homeowners do more sports that leave them needing a shower or bath afterwards.

Caring for your boiler

Chief Executive of ADEY, John Vaughan commented, “Our industry’s focus on central heating performance is vital, but it may be masking the importance of year-round protection for domestic boilers, and their function in providing a reliable source of hot water for our homes even in the summer months…This is creating a silent summer strain on our nation’s boilers.”

The research showed that over 25% of homeowners haven’t had their boiler serviced in the last year:

“The consequences of neglecting the regular servicing and maintenance of boilers is well understood by installers, but remains an important message to drill home to customers.” highlights Vaughan.
We understand how important it is that your boiler runs smoothly – an annual service can help keep it working efficiently, and with boiler cover, you’re better protected in a hot water and heating emergency.

Ease the strain

If you want to ease the ‘silent strain’ as well as be a little more energy efficient in summer, there are a couple of things you can try during the warmer months.

Have a summer service

Summer is the ideal time to make sure your boiler is in the best shape before winter sets in. An annual service with a gas safe engineer should catch any problems, keeping you safe and your boiler in good health – all year round.

Take cooler showers

The hot and sticky weather might make us want to shower more, but if you take a cooler and shorter second shower, you can cut down the work your boiler has to do and even lower your water usage.
