This national park may not have the height and cliffs of Snowdonia, nor the sparkling sea of Pembrokeshire, but it’s got lots of thrills and plenty of space. From Llandeilo in the west to just past Abergavenny in the east, it covers the finest scenery in south Wales, from rolling, glacier-carved uplands to crashing waterfalls and green hills overlooking patchwork fields. No doubt you’ll be drawn to its most famous feature, the precipitous sandstone ridge of Pen-y Fan and high point at 2,907 feet (886m).
This area is a huge draw for mountain bikers wanting to test their speed, endurance and gravity on the 26-mile Black Mountains Killer Loop. There are 14 graded and waymarked bike trails, making it an ‘easy’ option for those who don’t fancy biking while navigating from an Ordnance Survey map. Walkers will discover hundreds of routes, ranging from gentle strolls to big days out.
