Explore the Cairngorms
The Cairngorms National Park is Britain’s quintessential wilderness, containing the UK’s largest area of sub-Arctic landscape (the closest you’ll come to such conditions in this country). It’s home to many rare alpine flora and mammal and bird species – a quarter of the 400 rare and endangered British plant species are found here. Visit just part of its 1,467 square miles and you might see golden eagles, red deer, osprey, capercaillie, ptarmigan and free-roaming reindeer. And this is all easily accessible. The Angus Glens, on its southern fringe, are less than an hour’s drive from Dundee, while on its eastern edge the park is similarly close to Aberdeen. Climbers will especially be drawn to horizons dominated by the peaks of Ben Macdhui, Braeriach, Cairn Toul and Cairn Gorm.
