Dartmoor National Park

Explore Dartmoor National Park

Covering 368 square miles (954 sq km) Dartmoor National Park is a challenging but beautiful landscape. The climate is cool and wet, and the area is sparsely populated. The total population is around 35,000 and most are in a number of small towns including Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Morehamptonstead, and Princetown. It's also home to semi-wild ponies, which are commonly seen munching grass by the side of the road. Another common sight on Dartmoor is the Tor, a kind of hill topped with bedrock outcroppings. Many of these have interesting local legends attached to them.

Dartmoor’s waterfalls, including the tumbling Whitelady Waterfall at Lydford Gorge, can be seen in full spate even in the depths of winter. Everywhere you venture on Dartmoor, there are stone circles, burial chambers and mysterious clues to the distant past.
