Not long after my daughter Victoria had passed her driving test, she bought a little Citroen AX that she christened Daisy. It was her pride and joy, and she used it virtually daily - either to get to her job as a nanny or socially.
One morning after she'd only had 'Daisy' for a few months, she set off for work as usual. Then about half an hour later I got a phone call - it was Tory. "Mum, my tyre has gone." After I'd made sure that she was ok, I asked her where she was as I could come out to her. She told me that she was on the A1 near Newark and that she had called the AA so she would be fine. "I won’t be able to drive Daisy though," she added. I said that of course she would, all she had to do was ask the AA man to put on the spare. I heard Tory give a little sigh before she said once again, "Mum the tyre has gone."
It was at this point that the AA Patrol arrived. After a short conversation between him and Tory, he came onto the phone to me and told me that Tory was right – she wouldn't be able to drive Daisy as the whole wheel on the left hand-side at the back had sheared off and was probably in a ditch somewhere. It was extremely lucky that it hadn't caused an accident.
She had been overtaking a lorry when the driver started yelling at her and pointing at the car. Then, when she pulled into the lane and was in front of the lorry, he started flashing her and waved frantically at her to pull over to the side of the road. By now she was getting more than a little scared, so she decided to pull in just to get out of the way of the lorry. As soon as she stopped, Daisy tipped over! OMG I was so glad that she was safe and that the AA man was there with her. In the end an AA lorry came and took brought poor Daisy home.
We laugh about it now, but as the AA Patrol said at the time, if it had been her front wheel she would have crashed.
