A few years ago, during one of my shifts, I received a call from an elderly gentleman who wanted to join the AA. Everything was going smoothly and he was answering all my questions with no difficulty until I asked him for his car's registration, at which point he hesitated and said that he wasn't sure. I told him that wasn't a problem and gave him my name so that he could call me back once he had checked.
After about half an hour I noticed that I still hadn't heard from him, so I decided to call him. I tried a couple of times but his line was constantly engaged, so I naturally assumed that he was talking to someone and that was why he hadn't rung back.
Fifteen more minutes went by and the gentleman still hadn't phoned. I don't know why, but by now I was starting to get a little bit worried. Once again I dialled his number and once again his phone was engaged.
As I had all the gentleman's details (age, address etc) I thought it prudent to contact the police and fill them in on the situation. It was a good job that I did too. Apparently, when the police arrived at his home they found him in a very 'confused state' as they put it, and there was a gas ring on the cooker that was turned on with nothing sitting on it. Thankfully they got him some medical help and informed his family.
