"One of the great things about being an AA patrol is that you meet people from all walks of life. And there’s one encounter that I’m still benefiting from four years later.

"What happened was, I’d turned up at a breakdown and got chatting to the driver while I was fixing his car. Turned out he was a golf pro. When I said that I play myself he promised to give me half an hour’s tuition on the driving range at his club. He not only kept his promise, but it’s been doing wonders for my game ever since.

"Normally we’re just happy to get a wave and a simple thank-you. Special rewards aren’t always par for the course."
