"My 90-year-old father has Alzheimer’s and on a Thursday afternoon in July he set off in his car to pick up my mum from the hairdresser.
"As this is just three minutes away I didn’t think it would be a problem, but he never arrived to collect her.
"We had to go searching for him and then contacted the police. He was eventually found at Coalhouse Roundabout on the A1 near Gateshead. He had driven 153 miles and his car had run out of petrol. He was totally exhausted and confused.
"As he had not driven on a dual carriageway or motorway for 15 years, I will never know how he managed it and without the AA’s help I’m not sure how he would have got back home.
"At each stage of the journey, the AA contacted me to confirm where he and his car were. This really put my mind at rest.
"When my dad arrived back at midnight he had no idea what had happened or where he had been. I’m just so grateful that the AA was able to help. If it were not for those kind patrols he might still be driving round in circles right now. Who knows, he might have ended up in France!"
