"I was driving to work one morning when I crossed a very deep puddle. After coming out of it, the car was juddering with a misfire.
"I managed to get to the nearest lay-by and had a look under the bonnet. I could see electricity arcing across the surface of the DIS module – there was a hairline crack where the lead for my fourth spark plug clipped in.
"I called the AA and a patrol was with me within half an hour. I showed him the problem and he looked thoughtful for a moment.
"I’ll be right back," he said, and went over to his van.
"When he returned a few minutes later, he was holding a little jar of nail varnish.
"I didn’t think it was really the time to be painting his nails – or mine – so at first I was confused. But when he started applying it to the crack in the DS module, I soon realised what he was doing. We spent the next few minutes chatting while it dried.
"That should do it. Fire her up now, mate,” he said. I followed his instructions and the misfire was gone. No more arcing electricity.
"That’ll hold you for a day or two,” he quipped.
"Funny, I never thought I’d see the day when a spot of nail varnish would rescue my car!"
