Best crossover cars
The crossover has experienced a rocket-propelled surge in popularity over recent years, with buyers loving how these relatively compact models bring a big-car raise in ride height that many find confidence inspiring. Needless to say, as popularity has increased, so manufacturers have introduced more to the market and that means there are loads available through the used market today.
In this article, we’re going to be checking out some of the very best crossover cars to check out today - and they’re all available via AA Cars, too.
Nissan Qashqai
It seems only fitting that we start with a car that is often referred to as the original crossover. The Qashqai has only continued its rise in popularity over time as buyers flock to the good-to-drive Nissan which offers plenty of interior space and a well-sized boot that both make this a great choice for families.
The latest generation of Qashqai has introduced more technology than before - alongside a range of hybrid engines - but previous examples of this Nissan crossover still provide an excellent amount of space at a price that will beat many budgets.

If you’re after a crossover with a little bit of go-anywhere character, then why not take a look at the Dacia Duster? It’s a no-nonsense car that feels as thought it channels some of the spirit of a much larger SUV but in a more compact, easy-to-live with package.
You can get the Duster with a proper four-wheel-drive system, too, if you need added off-road traction, though ‘regular’ front-wheel-drive versions will no doubt bring the improved running costs that buyers will appreciate.

While you might imagine large estate cars and saloons when you think of Skoda, today the Czech firm’s line-up is mostly populated by SUVs and crossovers. The Karoq is one such vehicle, falling into place between the smaller Kamiq and the larger Kodiaq in the range. As a result, it’s got a great blend of both vehicles.
For example, it has a large boot that you’d usually associate with a full-size SUV, yet its relatively compact proportions mean it’s easy to live with and simple to park. Plus, it comes loaded with equipment from the off and this makes for an even more appealing used buy.

If you want a car that’ll be as little hassle as possible, then the Kia Sportage should be high up your list. Courtesy of Kia’s seven-year transferable warranty the Sportage is backed by a lot of support, though you shouldn’t have too many issues given this brand’s excellent reputation in the reliability stakes.
The Sportage is good to drive and great to look at, with earlier models featuring a huge ‘Tiger Nose’ front grille which really makes a visual impact when you’re out and about.

Mazda currently has a fine range of SUVs and crossovers, but one of our favourites is the compact CX-3. It’s the smallest car in the firm’s range of high-riding models, but it packs a lot into a small package. It’s good to drive, too, with the CX-3’s manual gearbox being one of the best about.
Mazda also does well in the reliability stakes, but if you’re worried about any potential issues then it could be a good idea to take out an additional warranty.

The Seat Arona is the smallest high-riding model in the Spanish firm’s range. That means it’s a great pick for urban drivers who might have limited parking space, or those that like to nip through town and not have to worry about positioning a far larger car.
Yet despite its small size, the Arona has an impressively spacious interior finished with loads of the latest equipment. There’s a clear and very usable central screen, while many models get a digital dial setup ahead of the driver too.

The Renault Captur is ideal for those that like to stand out from the crowd thanks to its quirky styling which looks eye-catching out on the road. The first-generation car is reliable and has plenty of features, but is available for some very low prices - it’s a good value-orientated buy as a result.
Because it’s around the same size as a Clio it’s easy to park and move around town, yet with a raised ride height you get that slightly clearer view of the road ahead that you’re not able to get from the regular hatchback Renault.
