The 2009 European Car of the Year-winning Vauxhall Astra steps up a class, and while not quite bettering the best family saloons available, is more than a match for them in terms of performance, quality and efficiency. While their reputation might sometimes be unfavourably placid, Vauxhall make cars which address the needs of what drivers want - something that is harder to get right than it sounds.
