Overall rating 4.5/5The Honda CR-V enjoyed a lot of popularity when it was first launched and, as a result, it is now a common sight on the used market at a variety of price points. With its spacious cabin and large boot, the CR-V is a fine choice for families while its efficient engines mean it shouldn’t cost too much to run, either. As with other Honda vehicles, the CR-V is accompanied by a great reliability track record.

The Honda CR-V has a full suite of autonomous emergency braking systems designed for a variety of scenarios, alongside speed and lane assistance technology. Many airbags are equipped throughout the cabin, too. Tested by Euro NCAP in 2019, the CR-V was awarded the maximum five-star rating, and also scored well for both adult and child occupant protection.
The most commonly found engine on the CR-V is a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol unit with either 171bhp or 190bhp. The former came with a manual gearbox, while the latter is linked to a CVT automatic. Later, a hybrid version was introduced which combined a 2.0-litre petrol engine with a compact electric motor and battery.
All versions of the CR-V are generously equipped, coming with features such as electric windows, heated wing mirrors and a CD player. A full climate control system is a great standard-fit function on all cars, too. You’ll need to opt for ‘SE-grade cars to get satellite navigation, however, while high-end ‘EX’ models benefit from leather upholstery and heated seats, too.
Lower-powered 1.5-litre models should return up to 36.2mpg, while the more powerful version suffers a slight penalty with fuel economy dropping to 35.8. Expect to see less on both models when equipped with four-wheel-drive. Hybrid models, meanwhile, should bring up to 40.9mpg and, again, slightly less on four-wheel-drive versions.
The CR-V is popular among families so check the interior for any damage and scuffs, as well as scrapes caused by loading child seats inside and out. You may want to look at the doors for any car park-related injuries, too. For extra information, try an AA vehicle inspection. With it, a trained technician will undertake a detailed look at any car you’re looking to buy and produce a summary of their findings.
Honda CR-V models are very reliable with owners reporting many miles of hassle-free motoring. However, if you’d like more information before you buy, then consider an AA vehicle inspection to help give a more detailed picture of any car you’re looking to purchase.
The Honda HR-V is available with either a 1.5-litre petrol or 2.0-litre petrol hybrid engine.
