Lying just to the east of the Pennines, South Yorkshire is dominated by the city of Sheffield - in which half of the county's population lives - but also includes the major cities of Doncaster and Rotherham. Outside of the cities the landscape is a mix of valleys and hills often which bear the evidence of the county's industrial and mining past; of which Sheffield was once the centre of a thriving industry.
Outside of Sheffield the county offers a number of attractions such as Conisbrough Castle and the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster, and the Peak District National Park in the west. Not as well served with road links as its neighbour West Yorkshire, the county does have good connections to both the north and south. With a far smaller railway network than similar cities its size however, Sheffield does rely on its roads, and so congestion is a common sight.
