Expert Opinion

The Mazda 323 name has been a part of the Japanese manufacturer's range for a number of years, but it is now most often associated with cars produced between 1998 and 2004. A large family hatchback, the 323 is a more conventional car than many of its more modern siblings, but as a solid used option it remains a competent and strong choice. Far more responsive and comfortable to drive than its look might suggest, it is fun as well as practical. A 1.5 litre engine producing 89bhp is the most refined and comfortable of those on offer, but the bigger 1.8 litre offers better power, which along with excellent reliability makes it a respectable - if a little visually underwhelming - family hatchback.
