Overall rating 4/5The most recent Renault Scenic available on the used market currently is the model built between 2016 and 2019. Maintaining the classic MPV shape that the Scenic had become known for, this car brought some extra efficiency to the model through electrification applied to some powertrains.
But at its heart, the Scenic still had a focus on everyday usability and practicality, which is why you’ll find a large boot and spacious cabin in this head-turning MPV. There’s plenty of tech on board to keep even the most avid of button-pressers happy, too.

The Renault Scenic was one of the safest cars ever tested by Euro NCAP back in 2016. It got a full five-star rating as a result, helped by a wide number of standard-fit airbags that boosted safety even further. The Scenic also has ISOFIX points on two of the rear chairs and an additional one on the front passenger seat - it’s easy to switch off the passenger airbag if you need this option.
Initially, the Scenic was available with 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel options, with both getting either manual or automatic gearbox selections. A Hybrid Assist model introduced some extra electrification for improved efficiency, too. Later, a 1.3-litre engine was introduced to effectively replace the older 1.2-litre model. Available with two outputs, it had either manual or automatic gearbox options.
The Renault Scenic is very well equipped as standard, bringing features such as air conditioning, digital radio and Bluetooth so you can connect your phone to the car’s audio system to stream music and make and receive calls. You’d have to go for ‘Dynamique Nav’ models to get satellite navigation, however, and this specification also introduces handy front and rear parking sensors - a must-have in a relatively large car like the Scenic.
The Hybrid Assist gets the best possible efficiency of all the Scenic models, returning a claimed 78.5mpg combined. The non-hybrid version still does well at just over 70mpg, too. You’re looking at around 41.5mpg for the 1.3-litre petrol version and near to 40mpg in automatic gearbox versions.
As a family-focused option, we’d be making sure that any used Renault Scenic we were looking at hadn’t been mistreated inside, and it’s worth checking the alloy wheels - which are quite large on most models - for any parking damage. Plus, make sure that the brake pedal feels normal - some cars were subject to a recall which remedied an issue which came from a deteriorated brake pipe. However, if you’d like even more detail then an AA Vehicle Inspection can provide it. A trained engineer will thoroughly inspect a car that you’re thinking of buying and produce a report detailing everything they’ve found.
Renault Scenics are, overall, quite reliable but as with any used car we’d check the MOT history of any vehicle to determine how it has been looked after. Plus, an AA Vehicle Inspection can go one step further and flag up any issues which might be underlying or difficult to see from the outside.
The Renault Scenic is available with 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre and 1.3-litre engines with both manual and automatic gearbox choices.
