Expert Opinion

Coupe-SUVs have quickly gone from a niche trend to the mainstream. Originally something only premium manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes turned their hands to, we're now seeing them at the more affordable end of the spectrum from brands such as Renault. The Arkana first arrived in the UK in 2021 as its new sleeker crossover, slotting between the Captur and Kadjar in its crossover line-up, and bolstered further by its hybrid-only powertrains, which are particularly in demand at the moment.

About Renault Arkana

With the Captur and Kadjar, Renault already has quite strong coverage in the SUV segment, but the Arkana arrived as a third pillar in its European line-up. Originally produced just for the Russian market, Renault decided to introduce it to other markets.

Arriving in 2021, the Arkana brought bold coupe-like styling to the line-up, while it's sold purely with electrified powertrains in the UK. Since its launch, Renault has rejigged the trim level line-up to reflect changes made to other cars in its range, such as the Clio and Captur.

Why buy a used Arkana?

High up on the reasons to consider a Renault Arkana are the way it looks. Though neither the Captur nor Kadjar are bad-looking choices, this new SUV offers plenty more in the way of style, with the coupe-like profile really helping this model to look the part. All versions also get larger alloy wheels and Renault's trademark C-shaped LED lighting, helping it to stand out in the compact crossover segment.

The electrified-only powertrains are another reason to consider the Arkana, with a choice of mild- and full-hybrid models on offer. The latter takes up the greater majority of sales, with its impressively low running costs proving really popular. Renault claims 58.9mpg, while CO2 emissions of 108g/km are commendable for a car of this type.

Despite the rakish looks, the Arkana is still a very practical choice, with a stretched platform ensuring it still offers plenty of space. There's as much headroom as you get in Renault's Captur, while the boot measures up to an impressive 513 litres, increasing to 1,263 litres once the rear seats are folded.

The level of standard equipment included on the Arkana is impressive too, with a reversing camera, 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and keyless entry included. Mid-spec versions then bring further driver assistance technology, such as blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, while the R.S. Line versions bring luxuries such as electric and heated suede and leather seats and adaptive cruise control.

Arkana updates

Here's a short history of the Renault Arkana, which dates back to 2019.

Renault first unveiled the Arkana as an affordable coupe-SUV in 2019, though purely as a Russian-market model.
A European-specific Arkana was then introduced in 2021, bringing electrified powertrains and generous equipment levels.
For 2022, Renault revised the trim level line-up, with new Evolution, Techno and E-Tech Engineered versions introduced.

Which used Arkana should I buy?

There are four main trim offerings on the latest Renault Arkana, with equipment highlights as follows.

Renault Arkana Evolution (previously called Iconic)

Electric parking brake, cruise control and speed limiter, automatic lights and wipers, rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, keyless entry and start, climate control, LED headlights, diamond-cut 17-inch alloy wheels.

Renault Arkana Techno (previously called S Edition)

Front parking sensors, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, multi-sense driving modes, high beam assist, 9.3-inch touchscreen, satellite navigation, 10-inch digital dial display, wireless phone charger, 18-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear windows.

Renault Arkana R.S. Line

Hands-free parking, adaptive cruise control, electric and heated front seats, heated steering wheel, 18-inch R.S. alloy wheels, R.S. styling kit, suede and leather seats.

Renault Arkana E-Tech Engineered

Diamond cut 18-inch alloy wheels, leather dashboard, gold interior stitching, gloss black mirrors.

What should I look for when buying a used Arkana?

The diamond-cut alloy wheels are susceptible to kerbing, so have a good look for any damage.
Make sure the car has been serviced, if the first service is due.
Modern touchscreens can be quite glitchy, so it's a good idea to check if all functions work and that you can easily connect your phone, either with Bluetooth or Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
