Great handling with precise steering. Ride can take getting used to as M sport is a bit on the firm side, but this is the compromise for great handling. Only had it for 6 months - no issues so far

So I’ve owned this car for 7 years and it’s going next week. Now when I first got the car it was at 37,000 miles. It was a smooth, comfortable reliable, easy to drive motor with alot of torque. Great on the bends very fuel efficient and the engine is superb. I’ve not had a single issue with the engine ever and it’s now got 108,000 miles. I h to change the clutch at 101,000 that 40k over the average. It’s still a smooth fun car to drive and on motorway a dream. But from the 85,000 it went down hill the last three years have been expensive, I’ve had to do certain part of the breaks every year, lights keep going, shock absorbers, wheel bearings and so on. You could say wear and tear but honestly it’s about 7k of work in the last three years. Even now another shock absorber has gone. I’ve gotta get that done before trading it in. So it’s a bloody fantastic car upto about 85,000 after that it goes down hill. Yet the bmw still been the most reliable, comfortable and enjoyable car to drive.

Hard ride. Pot holes, You hit one with this suspension ..Man! you better have big wallet. Cheap running costs maybe,, but all balances out with EGR cleaning, or Replacement at £340,, PDF replacement £1000. If your not running the car for more than 50 miles a day DPF will bloke within 9 mouths with the cost of £1000.. Also frameless door windows in frost don't open early morning and confuse computer and result in doors cannot be shut., and don't bother if it snows. stay in bed ..You want get out your street...There hopeless in snow or ice...So don't bother with school run...either...

Feels more like I would expect driving a HGV. Very difficult gear changes into reverse.

Excellent small car with plenty of space and excellent performance

I have this car as a company car. I drive about 40000 miles per year and the car is replaced every 3 years with about 120000 miles covered. This is the 4th 1 series I have selected. The car is sporty, economical and reliable as well as comfortable - exactly the same as the 3 BMW's before it I consider this a great car to drive and enjoy

Having driven VW Golfs for the past 10 years I find the BMW more stylish but very similar to drive and the stop-start system is marginally better. I am slightly disappointed with the storage space particularly in respect of the boot. With run flat tyres there is no spare wheel and I would've expected additional under floor boot space which is not the case. There are also fewer nooks and crannies in the interior such as no drawers under the seats as in the VW and no cover on the cup holders. The Harman Kardon stereo system is excellent although there are often occasions when my iPod fails to be recognised which is rectified by unplugging and replugging it, just a minor nuisance. The Sat/Nav is very good although there are occasions when you have to play around with the controls to get post code entry etc. The voice activation is slightly erratic too but once sorted the voice directions are quite clear although I haven't quite sorted out the best visual aspect. The warning to get ready for a turn comes about half a mile from the actual turn (a bit early) but the instructions are clear and concise, particularly that at 200 yards from the turn. The BMW drives like a big car without the obvious parking problems. In all a very nice motor car although quite expensive if you want the premium extras. I have only done about 600 miles in it to date and the mileage per gallon so far is not as good as the Golf, maybe time and running in will improve matters. For info with my spec the car came out at around £33,000.

A common problem with BMW N47 Diesel engines is the timing chains and tensioners are not good enough and when they fail they cause catastrophic damage to the engine. BMW are aware of problem but have not recalled the vehicles. This will ruin your car or leave you with an astronomical repair bill. DO NOT BUY A BMW as they do nothing to help!

This was the cheapest car, based on approx 12,000 miles per year over 10 years, taking into account price, mpg, road tax etc., that is capable of safely towing my caravan. So far after nearly 3 years, it has not dissapointed. It does approx 50mpg local, 65 to 70 mpg long distance, and 30 to 35 towing my caravan which is about 75% of the car's kirbweight. It is adequate on size for two adults but it would probably not be suitable for four on long journeys, unless they were below average size.

BMW have their eye on engineering but they have slipped badly with their concept of run flat tyres. Having to purchase new tyres every year does not make for low running costs!

My car is amazing. It has all the qualities I could ask for. I have owned Mercedes cars , Porch, Jeeps etc. but this is the most versatile and economic car I have ever had

Like all BMWs the 1 series offers an excellent driving experience. It's a very practical car for a single person or couple. Good performance/acceleration when required but also good fuel economy with the diesel engine. Extremely reliable. This is my third BMW (I previously had 3 Series Compacts) and I will certainly buy another 1 Series. The only downside ....... you need to work from home if it snows as the with rear-wheel drive is absolutely useless in snow and ice!

it's a great car spoiled by the cost of run flat tyres £1000 which no tyre workshop will repair a puncture on so a punture costs £250.Handling is amazing and performance is remarkable for a diesel. Ideal car for a couple.

I opted for a deisel for the first time and now wish I had not. It does not perform anything like my previous petrol engined BMW and with the cost difference between petrol and diesel, I am saving very little on running costs.

There are so many computerized sensors on the car that it becomes very expensive to maintain good running order.

I have had my 118d for about 6months now having bought it second hand. It's got great spec with the M-Sport kit, updated alloys and more internal extras than I have time to list. It drives brilliantly, if a little bumpy at times but that's what you get for buying a car with sports suspension. The boot and interior space is much bigger than I thought it would be. The car came with a 5 year service pack which the original owner had purchased with the car. This is transferable from owner to owner and well worth looking out for. Being a 118d its still nippy for getting to and from work with 140bhp but it falls under the efficient engine scheme so road tax is only £30 a year!
