I owned a Ford Cougar as my first car bought in 2011. The manual transmission was so smooth compared to any other manual Ive driven, it was very forgiving and elegant. It had a ton of storage room in sacrifice to the 2 back seats being cramped. The front bucket style seats were very comfortable and sat low giving it a sporty feel. Driving it through the winding road of the Adelaide hills was a ton a fun. The only negatives were its atrocious turning circle and that getting parts was expensive and needed to be imported from the US meaning I was without a working car for 2 weeks at times. The base model can look a bit ‘girly’ and some body kits make it look like a riced Supra. I think it looks elegant and it definitely stood out amongst most of my peers cars.

Have owned two cougars, both 2.5models and found them to be reliable, practicle and stylish. They are not everyone's cup of tea but that's down to individual taste. They are becoming few and far between now, particularly good ones and its fair to say they do stand out in the crowd but this is a cautionary tale too - I love them but don't get starry eyed if you see and want one,do your research first. Spares can be difficult to source and some expensive when found.Insurance group is 28.Buy one (2.5) registered before 31st March 2001 and you'll pay £255 anual road tax. After that date it's £305 !.Its something to do with emission legislation introduced that year. They have not quite achieved collector/owner status like the Capri or Sierra Cosworth but may do in the not to distant future. Buy one to use and enjoy - not as an investment ,they are a good car but speaking as someone who owned and ran Capri's years ago I don't think as many people will approach Cougar owner's in the future and say 'I used to have one of these '.If you still want one then go for it but DONT pay silly money and again, check prices via research. Who knows what the future holds ? Happy Cougar owner.

I have had my 1998 2.5 V6 Cougar for three and a half years. It cost me £595 initially in 2013, and has since then cost me only petrol, oil, tyres and suspension components. It has covered 35.000 miles and drives more smoothly and beautifully than any car I've ever had in 44 years of driving. The Duratec engine is a joy. I get 35mpg, and endless driving pleasure.
