I bought my cx5 2 years ago. First impressions were good. The 2.2 deisel engine was nippy. I loved the sat nav and radio system. I used the car to move house and found it great with the back seats down, it was like a van. The faux leather seats are great to wipe down after the kids and dogs had been in the car. Then I mechanics started failing. I had more lights on than Blackpool. I had a major service, replacing all oil filters, deisel filters etc. That helped for a while. Then it played up again. It was recalled so I had the repair done. Shortly after I found it lost power and I was putting premium deisel in it as I was told supermarket fuel is bad for the engine. Then one terrible day, I was druvingbalong motorway, kids in the back when it list all it power. The oil pump had failed and chain broke. It died on the hardshoulder. Scaring us all and needed to be towed and rescued. My kids are scared of it now, refusing to get in. It needs a new engine. Main dealer charges 7k. I've bought another car as I really don't have confidence in the car. The 2.2 deisel cars have known issues with turbos, breaks, oil pumps and generally a very poor engine. Once car ages and gets to around 70-80k milage things start to go wrong esp on years 12 to 15 apparently. I would not recommend buying one.

From personal experience point of view I would stay away from any Skyactive engine in the Mazda CX-5, Mazda 6 or Mazda 3. My engine block cracked after only 72,000km’s! with No overheating alarm. Note the Mazda doesn’t have a gauge but just a warning light that’s goes through a sequence of flashes if there is a problem but by the time that happens you’re already too late. The cost of repair was over 6,500EUR and not long out of warrantee I reached out to Mazda Ireland and Mazda UK and they refused to engage in any helpful discussions as to what could have been the root cause or any compensation. I’ve since learnt from getting the engine fixed it’s a common problem with the Skyactive engine that Mazda is just ignoring. I’ll be going for a car maker with longer warrantee next time. i.e. Not Mazda

This is 2nd model of this car, I've had & found both equally reliable, easy to drive even on long distances. I have even pulled a car out of a ditch, where the car the car had slid during a heavy rainstorm!

It meets all my needs but a bit tight on rear seat leg room.

Comfortable car with a lovely Diesel engine. The only gripe I have is the fuel consumption. I chose the 2 wheel drive model to get better fuel consumption but i average 42 mpg driving carefully. This is nowhere near the 60+ advertised.

Following a series of sports cars grand children forced a change of car. The CX5 has about 180 bhp so has enough zip for most conditions and returns between 40 and 50 mpg. I chose the Mazda after looking at similar cars in the SUV style. Price, quality, and engine size/output narrowed my choice to Toyota or Mazda. I road tested both. The Toyota drove like a lorry and rolled like a drunken sailor. The Mazda drives like a slightly over weight hatchback and is a safe and predictable drive. By doing my homework I got the right car.
