Probably the best comfort/performance combination of the big engine SL's with 500BHP on tap and 0 - 60 in searing 4.6 sec, however a money pit to run. With only 49000 on the clock, problems over 2 yrs use included new hydraulic pump (£ 2500) new heated rear window ( £3500 ) and new keyless door handle (£250). Main defect with the car was that unless used on daily basis, second battery runs down , so you have to drive some 4 miles before top can be lowered. Fabulous effortless long distance Grand Tourer.

Excellent little car. Responsive and fun to drive although petrol consumption is high. Reasonably expensive to operate and maintain with low boot space but enjoyable and good for cruising. Reliability is quite good.

The Mercedes AMG 55 SL is the best car I have ever owned. So much so that I have kept the current car for 11 years from new, whereas I would normally change my car every 2 or 3 years. Ample power, great gearbox, hardtop drops to give open air motoring in a few seconds. Has been reliable over those 11 years with only minor problems. Downside is that the bodywork is now showing signs of rust in panel joints. Modern cars should not have this problem. Only requires service every second year and costs at main dealer are very reasonable for such a high performance car.

fast powerful car, comfortable. Thirsty. Only 2 seats

The Mercedes SL is quite simply a stunning car to drive, the only down side is the fuel consumption, but you do have to expect low fuel performance with a 3.5 litre engine but this is more than made up for by the enormous fun you can have driving the car especially with the roof down, and I can safety say that the next car I will purchase will be another SL

I love this car, but it costs a lot to maintain and repair!

An older model which is excellent touring car and has proven over more than 100K miles and 20+ years to be utterly reliable and a great pleasure to drive with reasonably economical fuel consumption. Capable of long distance high speed cruising as well as great fun in coping with Alpine roads . Dry and comfortable with easy electric hood for the summer, the hardtop for the winter use aids in reducing wind noise etc and keeps the interior warmer in adverse winter conditions. Luggage space is very adequate for 2 as the rear seats could not be used except for very small children and cannot be used when the rear wind deflector is in place in the summer months. Even after long ownership the original exhaust catalytic convertor etc are still in good condition illustrating the high quality of the original manufacture. Very reluctant even to consider changing to another model or make unless major problems arise.
