I have been a motor mechanic for over 50 years and can honestly say that it is one of the best practical cars that I have owned. I bought it off a customer when it was 4 years old and still use it to date. It returns 50-60 mpg and is very comfortable to drive. It is a great workhorse and I have carried engines/bricks/paving blocks amongst other heavy things in the large area in the back. It is one of the most reliable vehicles that I have ever owned and is rust free.

hi all, bought as a trade in at a local garage as an ex private hire car that looked fantastic in july 2008 as july 2001 car it had 158,000 miles on a seven year old car. it had been around! october 2019 still have her and mileage is 381,000,so nearly 400,000 miles, clutch and dual mass was changed at 270,000 miles, heater matrix,8 sets of tyres,4 cambelts, regular oil changes, two batteries, two gear oil changes and three sets of brakes, three exhausts. the rest is original, yes the engine never rebuilt, turbo never rebuilt, gearbox never rebuilt,no rust, this is truly by a massive degree the best car i have ever owned, and i have just seen other posts on here with massive mileages without problem, she runs beautifully, totally reliable,i have kept her because i know there is no car out there more modern that will do 400,000 miles...... if anyone wants to see evidence of old mots, they are welcome to speak to me..... thankyou

Owned last 10 yrs, now has 211,000 miles on same engine, 2.0 hdi 90s version so no DPF or DMF thank god ! Huge load carrying space, good mpg etc, comfy but the very best thing is that I can rely on it to start and it always gets me home which is priceless....like a good old true friend. God only knows what to replace her with when the time comes ? Find a good one and look after it......

I have had my 406 hdi 90 estate now for just over a year. Bought with 155,000 miles I have only done 2,000 in the last year. I Have been after one of these for many years as being a mechanic for 22 years I have worked on and serviced many of these vehicles and always remarked at how rust free and reliable they are. Test driving them I always thought they were extremely comfortable. I bought mine off a mechanic friend and they had replaced almost every linkage and bush the year before for mot and replaced all four tyres and both rear brake callipers with discs and pads all round! I picked it up with 12 months mot for £450 which I thought was a bargain. It was due a service so I carried out a full service myself naturally and fitted a £40 Halfords radio in as the old one didn’t work and gave it a full valet. We have been from Dorset to North Yorkshire on holiday and have used it sparingly as I’m now mobile and wife has her new car. She has a 2018 Nissan and I prefer driving the 406, in fact I prefer it! It’s the boot space which is incredible, like a cathedral when you put the back seat down! This year for mot it wanted for nothing and I had to put a battery on in this cold weather and a new auxiliary belt. Timing belt is due this year. Over all a fantastic car. Only thing I would advise when looking at one is make sure all the Electrics work as that’s the biggest bugbear for some owners!

This May 1999 registered 406 1800 LX Has been in my possession since May 2001 which at the time of purchase had 27000 mile on the clock. The current mileage is over 317000 miles with the original engine and gearbox still in please,During my nearly 20yrs of ownership I have had no major problems. It has always been very reliable and economical, averaging 37.5mpg (Ok I have had to replace the clutch a couple of times and of course the tyres and exhaust) The bodywork of the car is still in very good condition with no body rust or rot, This in spite of it being left out in all weathers and not garaged during the time of my ownership. I do of course make shore that it does get an annual service. To date it has never been refused an MOT . The car itself is a very comfortable cruiser and can easily keep up with the fastest traffic on the motorways. It came complete with a 6 player CD. Radio and Tape Player and excellent Hi Fi Sound System. The currant book value is given as £150. Although I would need to spend at least £25,000 to get a modern equivalent

19 years. After 19 years, this car hasn't broken down on me once. A masterpiece not in complexity but reliability. A comfortable ride, silent but not slow at all. There is something very special about it that makes you fall in love with this car. It's a car with great character, not the greatest technology or the best engineered one. But it is incredible, a true friend. Thank you Peugeot for this experience. I will always have this car in my mind as one of the best I've ever driven.

I get paid monthly and budget for fuel is worked out what this includes sd&p and commuting to work I can't knock my peugeot406 for the miles per gallon i get but it would be appreciated if the government would stop penalising the working class motorists with different charges

We have had this Peugeot 406 from new and she has always been very reliable, always starting at the first turn of the key .Fuel economy is fairly good between 35 and 40 mpg cruising at the national speed limit. The engine seems to get better with age along with acceleration but the 406 1.8 is not the best when you put your foot down . The ride comfort and handling have always been good , not bettered by some more modern cars I have driven. The most amazing thing is that after nearly twenty years the 406 has had no problems with rust and the only problem I had with the engine was when it developed a slight misfire which only turned out to be a faulty ignition coil pack. The 406 has passed every MOT with only the odd advisory notice , I have only had to replace normal wear and tear items like brake parts , suspension drop links, engine timing belts and water pumps. the clutch is still original but I think that always depends on how the car is driven. Heaven knows what I will replace it with.

Basically a very good vehicle, well built and reliable. The most dissapointing aspects of the car:- 1) The warning lights on the dashboard, some of which come on without warning, and when investigated prove to have no reason to have come on (ie. no fault). Talking to our local garage they suggest this is a very common fault on these cars! 2) The cost of the exhaust particulate filter, and related regeneration fluid -- Outrageous! I have owned 4 previous Peugeots Estate cars, all very good cars, but the dissapointing issues mentioned above make this current vehicle the least good Peugeot I have owned, despite the fact that in theory it should be the best.

I've had this Peugeot 406 estate for about 3 yrs, bought 2nd hand with 118,00 miles on the clock. Not the most comfortable of rides but has good fuel ecomonmy (45 mpg on average), large enough space to carry everything I need to put in it and parts are not too dear especially 2nd hand, as there is a breakers for Peugeot local to me. It cruises at 70 (and I confess a bit more at times) with little effort and motorway driving is a breeze, although I do wish this model had a cruise control. It has the usual complement of electrics, mirrors, windows, fog lights, map reading light, Cd/radio. You can switch off the passenger air bag, why you'd want to, unless your always on your own in the car. It has a good heater, which was a bit naff on my previous car (97 Mondeo estate) and Air Con which I rarely use. I've had no problem with rust, just a bit coming through now around the wheel arches. I do have it regularly serviced and get the service book stamped, it has a full service history, so hopefully most problems are sorted before they happen. The only major thing that has happened was the anti brake locking mechanism went on the offside side front wheel. Other than that I would buy this car again, if only they still made it.

I am very happy with my vehicle having had it since 2005. Prior to that I had a 405 which I may well have today had someone not run into the back of it whilst I was stationary and did such severe damage to the chassis that it was written off.

A good reliable workhorse but now, after 10 years and 90,000 miles, maintenance and replacement parts are proving very expensive, so will soon trade in.

I've had this car for 6years and she had high mileage when I got her. I have been all over the place Europe, Scotland, back and forth from London to Norfolk and she just keeps going. A great car to move house in several times. Comfortable to drive and be a passenger in.

Owned for 8 years. Apart from routine maintenance costs, only outlay has been for tyres, brakes and exhaust system. Has never let me down and has covered over 200k miles. Load space is massive when rear seats are folded down. Has been a great family car.

Excellent car, many up to 15 years old still on the road. We have an executive top-of-the-range model for 'posh' trips. I am thinking of trading in my 405 workhorse, which cost more than twice as much to repair this year as it's worth, for a 406....

Purchased second-hand 2 1/2 years ago Runs well, starts first time with no complaints at all. Very reliable, comfortable car.

Ex lease car. Not the liveliest car I've ever owned but has proved to be the most reliable, comfortable and practical for my needs. It has never let me down over eight years and 100k miles. Bodywork remains sound and is in very good condition despite lack of regular cleaning. Sadly it will have to be replaced in the next 12 months and am currently at a loss as to what the replacement vehicle will be as this model is no longer produced.

I loved my car for over ten years, but my family have left and I can't afford the petrol or the tax. Exchanging it next week for a Peugeot 207, three door saloon.
