Firstly, the car is fast. 0-62mph is 4.5 seconds so it really does go. However, the exhaust pops a little but the note is very artificial and in a V6, something you would expect. The engine is fairly efficient and its a comfortable drive. Reliable as expected seeing as it is an Audi and space wise you cannot complain!

Having sold a Porsche 996 Turbo S because its value had hit the stratosphere and there was too much capital tied up in a car, I needed an alternative that was cheaper but still exciting. I scrutinised the market minutely and set a budget below £10,000. The Audi S4 has been a great success. It goes like excrement from an earth moving implement and the exhaust note from the four chromed tail pipes is enough to frighten the horses. It is a more relaxed and less precise drive than the 911 and it is more of a beefy GT than a sports car. Nonetheless I am delighted with the car. The dealer near Epsom from whom I bought the beast was excellent in every way. The car was prepared superbly and the hand over process was impeccable.

The S4 is beautifully built vehicle equipped with a large V8 engine. Fortunately I do not have to commute in it as I rarely see more than 23 mpg from it even when I drive like my father. The S4 is most at home on a fast A road or the motorway, when I can often see up to 28 mpg from it. Despite the car's thirst for fuel, I would recommend a manual S4 Avant to anyone who can afford to run it. The acceleration from a 345 bhp V8 in a small estate has to be experienced to be believed. Oh, and 4WD also means it happily ploughs through snow too! I have owned the car for more than three years, and the only mechanical issues I have encountered to date have been due to the appalling standard of the roads in West Kent ? a broken spring, a damaged tyre and suspension issues.

A little thirsty but otherwise comfortable on very long distances, reliable, practical and fun

Sound vehicle. Great sound from the V8 and good performance. Servicing and running expensive.

It is a lovely car, with immense power thanks to its V8 engine. Well built, smooth to drive, especially on motorways, and very reliable, the only down side to it is fuel economy - usually 22 mpg.
