What is At Home breakdown cover?

At Home extends our standard level of cover, Roadside Assistance, to breakdowns within 1/4 mile of your home. It's one of several options you can choose when buying breakdown cover.

Also known as ‘Home Start’ or ‘breakdown cover from home’, At Home gives you peace of mind that we can help you out anywhere in the UK, all the way up to your front door.

If you have standard breakdown cover without At Home, you won’t get assistance if you’ve broken down within 1/4 mile of your home.

How does At Home breakdown cover work?

Our standard cover begins when you’re 1/4 mile away from home – At Home extends this cover to your home address. Breakdowns close to home are more common than you’d expect, with flat tyres and flat batteries often the cause, so it helps to be prepared.

If you break down at home or in the surrounding 1/4 mile of your home, one of our expert patrols will come to you and attempt to fix the problem then and there. We fix 9 out of 10 vehicles on the spot.

How do I select At Home when buying breakdown cover?

Here’s how to select At Home to ensure you’re covered right up to your door:

  • Hit the ‘Get a quote’ button
  • Share your home postcode and date of birth, then choose what sort of cover you need
  • We’ll display your personalised quote, then select ‘Continue’ to go to the Options step
  • On the Options step, select ‘At Home’ along with any other options you want – the price of your plan will update automatically

What should I do if I break down at home?

Whether you have At Home breakdown cover with us or not, we’re happy to help. Here’s what you should do if you break down at home or within 1/4 mile of your address.

If you have AA At Home breakdown cover

Report your breakdown online or via the app, and we’ll send a patrol to you. They’ll let you know if a repair is possible or if you’ll need a tow to a local garage.

If you have AA breakdown cover, but not At Home

Call us on 03330 046 046 and we’ll arrange for help. You’ll need to upgrade your policy to include At Home – we’ll charge an upgrade fee and a surcharge for using the service immediately.

You can’t buy breakdown cover for the same day online. Instead, call us on 03330 046 046 for instant breakdown cover and we may be able to help. There’ll be a surcharge for using the service immediately.

Prices shown include insurance premiums payable to the insurer(s) and a fee payable under a separate contract between you and Automobile Association Insurance Services Limited (AAIS) for arranging and administering your cover. Please see the terms and conditions for more information.

 

AA Breakdown Cover is arranged by Automobile Association Insurance Services Limited which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). You can check their register online. Will the AA come to my house?

Yes, we’ll come to your house for breakdowns if you have At Home breakdown cover on your policy. Even if you don’t have it, you can still call us on 03330 046 046 and we’ll arrange for a patrol to come out and help you. If your property is inaccessible due to adverse weather conditions (e.g. due to heavy snow or flooding) our patrols may not be able to attend until the obstruction is cleared.

Will my car be fixed at home or towed to a garage?

Our patrols will attempt to repair the problem with your vehicle where you break down, but if that’s not possible, your vehicle will be towed to a local garage.

Do I need breakdown cover at home?

At Home breakdown cover gives you Roadside Assistance right up to your door. It’s particularly useful for common overnight breakdown problems like flat tyres or engine issues, or when your car simply won’t start in the morning.


If your car is broken down at home in the morning but you still need to go to work, you can arrange for one of our patrols to come to you when you’re back home later in the day. 

What isn’t covered by At Home breakdown cover?

At Home doesn’t include any of our other options like National Recovery or Onward Travel.


If you want to be able to get a lift to any UK destination after breaking down, you’ll need National Recovery. To get alternative transport or overnight stays covered by us, you’ll need Onward Travel.

What do I do if I break down without At Home?

If you break down at home or within 1/4 mile of your address but don’t have At Home breakdown cover, you can still call us on 03330 046 046 and we’ll arrange for a patrol to come out to you. You’ll need to upgrade your policy to include At Home – we’ll charge an upgrade fee and a surcharge for using the service immediately.

What do I do if my car breaks down?

Follow these four steps if you break down:


1 – Make sure you’re in a safe place. Move your vehicle off the road if possible, or pull up onto the hard shoulder if you’re on the motorway.


2 – Stay well away from moving traffic – it’s usually safest to get out of your car (using the doors facing away from passing traffic) and wait behind a barrier.


3 – Put your hazard warning lights on and wear a reflective jacket, if you have one.


4 – Once you’re safe, give us a call on 03330 046 046. We’ll come and rescue you, even if you’re not a member yet.

If you’re already with us, you can also report a breakdown and pinpoint your location using our app. It's the fastest way to ask us for help and track our arrival.

What should I do if I buy a new vehicle?

You only need to let us know if you have vehicle cover. Tell us as soon as you can, so we can update your membership details – and check your new vehicle is eligible (Ts&Cs apply). Once you've updated us, you’ll be covered in 24 hours.
