This is an owner's review of a 2015 Avensis saloon. The car was chosen as a change from buying German cars, its my first Toyota. The Avensis's best qualities are low purchase price, reliability (zero issues) and low running cost. Long distance comfort is also pretty good due to two correctly positioned arm rests, a left foot rest, good steering feel, and an easy to use stalk mounted cruse control (much better than awkward to locate buttons on the steering wheel). However, the driver's seat which has a raised front and no tilt adjustment, has to be adjusted to just the right position to ovoid thigh cramp. Other positives are the 8" sat nav screen, fast warming heater, good build quality, good visibility due to relatively deep windows, slim pillars and reversing camera. The car has sufficient room for four adults, a big glove box, huge storage box under centre arm rest, a rubber lined mobile phone lay-down area forward of the gear kever, and a boot of over 500 litres capacity which can extend thanks to folding rear seats. The 2.0 litre BMW sourced engine which produces 105kw (141hp) and lots of torque was initially coarse before magically quitenening at 20,000 miles to be unobtrusive except in stop-start town driving where the diesel coarseness (in comparison to a petrol engine) remains. The Toyota's engine is actually quieter than a more powerful version of this engine installed in the current BMW 520d; presumably extracting the extra power results in the noticeable harder edge to the engine sound. Fuel consumption has averaged 51mpg with 58-60mpg achievable on long journeys and never less than 45mpg. The car is serviced by the excellent local Toyota dealer at 12,000 mile intervals, and in addition I perform a DIY oil change (with the aid of a pump which sucks the old oil out via the dipstick pipe) mid way between services meaning an oil chance every 6,000 miles, although Toyota claim this is not necessary. As with every car there are some negatives; no height adjustment or squab tilt adjustment of passenger seat, no squab tilt adjustment of driver's seat, no universal closing of car windows from remote, poor ride quality, a jiggleness always there, especially on uneven city streets, time and temperature display so small they are next to impossible to read, sat nav unreadable in direct sunlight, climate control air distribution not a patch on German cars such as Audi, and the screen is also difficult to read. All that said the really serious fault is the exceptionally dim headlights which both on main beam, and when dipped fall well short of providing the night time visibility offered by competitors. As a result, I drive my Avensis on dark and winding country roads at a significantly lower speed than could be comfortably and safely achieved with my previous cars. The Avensis will probably give many years and perhaps a half million miles of trouble free service however it's clear that the engineers at Toyota focus on robust simple durable eneineering and accept any hint of sportiness being expunged from the DNA of their family cars which are the automotive equivalent of white goods. An efficient tool for the job rather than a driver's car. That said, improve the lights, the ride, and the ergonomic issues mentioned to have a pretty good car for the vast majority of owners who drive sensibility within the speed limits, probably a better option than an expensive car which in reality costs too much of the family budget.

As I approached 60 years of age and having driven for forty years I bought my first foreign car. Always a Ford man until they brought the Modeo out and then switched to Vauxhall (GM). Had two Vectras - the first was written off by an uninsured criminal - and I have got to say I wish I had bought an Avensis years ago. The small and niggling problems that seemed to occur with the Vectra are now a thing of the past (the ECU of my 2nd Vectra packed up after 70k miles and Vauxhall quoted £964 for a replacement - the car was not worth that much!!). Switched to an Avensis and simply had no problems - very comfortable, reliable and for a car 10 years old looking good. Only downside is that it is more or less impossible to replace a headlight bulb unless you are skilled - took it to Halfords and it took him 25 mins to do it. All round a class car

Owned this car for ten years. Was 8 months old when purchased. Inall that time I have had to have a new clutch - not cheap. Otherwise I have had very few problems with it and it has given me great service and comfort. Heard about 12 months ago about defective air bag (passenger) still waiting to hear when they are in and it will be fixed. Unusual. Would recommend it at anytime.

No real problems in 9 years of average mileage. Regularly get a real 50 mpg out of it.

My Toyota Avensis Vermont D4D is nearly 14 years old, with 110,000 miles on the clock. In the last five years, at MoT test, the only comments have been "the number plates need to be replaced" and "the indicator lights are not orange enough". While hoping not to tempt fate, this car starts first time, goes like a train when required, is reliable beyond words and is as cheap as chips to run. But diesel engines are rapidly becoming frowned upon, because of the emissions (and I really do get that). Also, it's a fact that when lean-burn diesels became widely available in the mid 1990s, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Dear Gordon, bless him) decided to massively increase fuel duty on DERV which made diesel more expensive than petrol. So my next purchase will probably be a petrol-engine, mid-size saloon. I'm not really looking forward to that day. Has anybody got any (helpful) suggestions?

great car, great manufacturer/ customer service

The only maintenance required in the annual service. From the cars on sale at the moment it is very difficult to find anything comparable for my next car (petrol, ca 2000cc, full spare wheel).

good car good comfort

This is probably the most reliable car I have owned. In five years I have only had annual services and replaced tyres and wiper blades.Comfort is good and running costs are relatively low for a large car. My previous cars were Jaguars and the slightly reduced levels of performance and comfort are easily compensated by the hugely reduced running costs.

I bought this car second hand but it came with a seven year warranty from the dealership, I wanted a reliable big estate with a petrol engine as the cost to repair unreliable diesel cars has gone through the roof. To date no issues with the car a bit under powered but if you rev it a bit more it does the job. All round great work horse and Goodwood for long journeys.

For practicle reasons I only buy 5 door cars which are great for space and transporting large or long items. The Avensis is best 5 door I have owned its reliable, comfortable, durable and low maintenance.
