I've only owned my VW Golf for 16 months, having bought it second-hand. This is my first Volkswagen, and I'm very satisfied. It's performance is fine for what I use it for, which is mainly local driving with the odd long distance trip. The engine is quite frugal with fuel, as I don't particularly thrash it. With regard to comfort, comparing the Golf with the last two cars that I've owned, which have been Ford Focus's, the Golf is better. So far it has been very reliable, and though the boot is slightly smaller than the Focus, it's good enough for our needs.

Fantastic build quality. Great styling and comfort. Good space inside. Good performance.Great family hatchbook - and two medium sized dogs fit in the boot with comfort!

The main problem is the cost of fuel..plus annual insurance. Servicing and MOT are also a once a year expense.

VW are great, having had the worst car in history, a Mercedes Benz C270 ESTATE with body rust, soft alloy wheels, steering probs and a dangerous auto gear box where the drive would go into neutral during an overtaking manoeuvre. No wonder there are so few Mercs on the road these days=rubbish and cost me a lot of money to repair. BACK TO VW AND MY GOLF, IT GIVES AND GIVES, Great. PS. MY GOLF HAS 97000 MLS AND IS 11 YEARS OLD.

Excellent flexible small family car, comfortable, reliable, adequately quick, and will achieve 50mpg if driven in a reasonably relaxed manner. Although will seat 5, not really room for their luggage.

love my golf to bits but it is now getting old the engine is fine but i am beginning to get problems with leaks, condensation and central locking failing in the cold weather, switches and electrical stuff is slowly detererating,i would love to buy a brand new one but they are a bit pricey for me but will most certainly be considering a newer one in the new year.great first car but with a lower engine as they are safe, reliable and hardly break down so dont give you many problems.

I have had this car for coming up to 3 years in January 2014, it is on a contract deal which ends then. However, I intend to buy this car outright sometime this month as having had it from brand new I know it's history and am very happy with it's performance and reliability.

On the whole it's a nice comfortable car. I've had it for 9 yrs now. The front nearside window dropped down the door one frosty morning. Replaced the O2 sensor once or twice. I get it serviced at my village garage every year when the MOT is due. I've replaced the tyres twice, the exhaust once, and battery twice. I has fairly poor acceleration, but does about 36-38 mpg (I still do the conversion from litres to check)! I just hope it keeps running for a few more years.

What can you say about Volkswagen that hasn't already been said, practical, comfortable, reliable, economical some say a little boring, maybe, maybe not but it's happy driving to work, taking rubbish to the tip, picking up a washing machine in the boot or taking the family out for the day.Great car for a reasonable price that holds a good resale value.

Had the car for over 6 years. It's solid, reliable, fuel efficient and I've had no major problems with it. Every so often I do consider getting a new car but the one I have just keeps on going.

My VW Golf is my first automatic. I like it. The only problem I have is that if left for say 5 days the battery becomes flat. VW don't seem to be interested. According to the internet this is a problem with most Golfs. Other wise the car is good.

13 years, 60000 miles from new. New axle under warranty; otherwise only minor rare faults. Totally reliable, unproblematic; capacious and comfortable, not specially sporty; for me cheap to insure, but now expensive to tax.

The dashboard is very difficult to see in the daytime, even when swicthing on the lights to illuminate it, or in high-contrast lighting - the illumination is poor (too dim even on max brightness, and blue, a poor colour choice - green would be better; a separate circuit to power the instrument lights on at all times would be best) The radio "screen" cannot be seen when wearing polarising sunspecs. The boot is a little too small, as the rear window is almost vertical making the car shorter than some similar hatchbacks. Rear vision is notoriously poor in this car. Single reversing light is almost useless - should be double and brighter; and single rear foglight should be a double as well - both are foolish costsavings. The DSG auto gearbox sometimes gets "hysterical" and changes down into 2nd on hill ascents quite unnecessarily, and then sticks there even when it would be normal for it to change up to 3rd. BUT driving is smooth and safe and comfortable, seats are supportive, roadholding is good and brakes are excellent

This car has proved to be a most satisfactory vehicle and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to a potential purchaser of a car of this size and type

I have had this car (Mk 4 Golf) for 11 years and have had great service from it. It has done about 110,000 miles with a 1200 mile round trip to Scotland twice a year - once it sits on the motorway it is effortless. I have kept it regularly maintained and serviced and have had no significant failures. It still has the original clutch and it feels smooth and responsive and a joy to drive. Acceleration is as good as when new. Performance seems undiminished. Seats and trim show little signs of wear. Body and paintwork shows no external signs of corrosion. Spares can be more expensive than some brands but failure rates seem better than most. All the gadgets electrical bits still work as new. The only small negative is that the seats seem harder than some brands but not enough to call it uncomfortable.

I once read that the most economical motoring was to buy a new car and run it for as long as you can. That has proved the case with my Golf Match bought in 2003. It has recently gone over the clock and has been a great car doing the daily commute, taking us abroad on holidays and family trips. I have always had it regularly serviced and it is a comfortable drive with a low driving position. I may update to a new car soon and it is highly likely to be another Golf.
