The 1.6 tdi VAG engine on this car with engine code CAYC is incredible unreliable. There are major issues with the diesel injector nozzles and with the EGR valve. These parts are extremely expensive to change and very difficult to source. I am shocked at how bad VW group quality has become. Thumbs down.

Solid, good build quality, good to drive and 2.0 GT has power when required. Good height adjustment on seat to attain a good driving position. Â Running costs are low.

I have owned several, one of which I had for eleven years and was its fifth owner, went round the clock twice ( when there were only 100,000 ) on! I have found their reliability improving constantly, not in a gadgety way but in important aspects of life of car, like bodywork and electrical problems. I would reccommend.

In spite of VW's much publicised woes, I presumed my 1.6 TDi diesel would be one to be recalled for modification. But happily this is not the case and the Golf Mark 7 bought in March 2014 has proved to be a reliable, economic car. In many ways it is understated , almost fitting seamlessly into executive class. In fact the is one of the classeless and timeless vehicles, which fits into any setting be that urban or in the country. Averaging easily 60 plus mpg on longer runs it has turned out to be an epmic

A sporty car which has brought back the simple pleasure of 'going for a drive ' which I remember from my youth and which I thought I had lost for good. Would recommend this car to anyone

I LOVE MY OLD GOLF - BUT AT 17 YEARS OLD AND WITH IT'S PLASTIC SKIN PEELING OFF IT MAKES THE CAR LOOK AS THOUGH IT'S GOT TERRIBLE ECZEMA. MIND YOU, LOOKING LIKE THAT NO ONE WILL PINCH IT. JOHNTY

Fantastic small family hatch, that does everything well and fantastic visibility. Benn looking to change my car, but can't find anything else better for the money.

The Mk5 2000 litre TDI GT is a beautiful car when it is working but things do go wrong on a regular basis and they are prohibitively expensive, when it was 3 years old the climate control, Turbo and a few other bits went wrong the VW main dealer wanted over £5,000 plus VAT to sort it very nearly making it unviable the 2nd line dealers when I first got the car were not up to speed so screwed the job up, it is now awaiting somebody to call on it as it is stuck in my garage not working as it says Garage Emission and won't start. Good when they are going but a bit Russian Roulette on reliability and running costs.

We've had 5 Golfs over the years and this is the one we have enjoyed driving the most. It has comfortable seats. Fuel economy is good. It looks good and has attracted the most positive comments from people than any other car we've had. We can't fault it.

A good, medium-sized car for 2-4 people. Handles well, responsive and economical. Averaged 61mpg over a 5 year period. I like the autostop/start in stationary traffic. Subject to a few behind-the-dashboard rattles that come and go.

Purchased the car new, 3 years ago with a combined 3 year service package which seemed good value. Not caught up in the widget scandal. Very happy with the car. Reduced my fuel bill by half. Experienced a couple of minor issues but nothing worth noting. My major concern is the servicing of the car and the recent MOT all undertaken by the VW showroom/service outlet. One gets the feeling that although one has paid upfront for the service package there always seems to be an extra that not covered and then added to the bill. Had the car serviced in July then has MOT in August and it was during the MOT that I was advised that the brake fluid required changing, why did this not happen during the July service? Found out recently that we should have chosen the petrol option as we really only use the car for short journeys, however we are now stuck with it for the foreseeable future. All in all a great purchase with reservations regarding the servicing package.

Only failure air con pump. Pleasant to drive, economical and comfortable . VW service has been good at the main dealer even if not cheap. Would seriously consider another.

Nice car but a shame the battery dies so quickly when cold and unused.

Bought the car nearly new when commuting large distances for work - proved comfortable, safe, good to drive and, particularly, economical. Have since retired so traveling less now. Initially it was reliable though VW main dealer servicing proved quite expensive. Now high mileage and several quite large repair bills over the past year or two - will look to replace soon, perhaps with new GTD or GTi. Angry re VW emissions scandal however, and though this model not directly affected, think VW should be offering compensation as re-sale/part ex value reduced.

Amazing car, comfortable & great performance. Great on fuel. Handles very good. Only issue is that leg room is a little bit tight in the back if you have a long legged driver/passenger in the front & you have long legs & Sat in the back. Has everything you need in a car, I highly recommend this car. For me & my young family it is the perfect car! It's also a cool car to look at. Sound system is amazing quality unlike most other cars that have cheap speakers that normally break after a short period of time & don't sound that good. Vw cars for me are the best all round for quality, comfort, performance, reliability, low cost running & they hold there value, so you will pay more for it than a competitor car that's similar spec but you won't regret it if you brought a vw. I've owned Vauxhall's, Seat's, Ford's & Peugeot's & none of them even come close to being as good as volkswagon!

Excellent, small estate.Fuel economy is massive 70+ mpg.Comfortable motorway cruising, sits slightly over 2000rpm at 70mph. Good ,tight handling on twisty Highland roads, suspension ideal. This is 1.6 tdi version,so not the most responsive pulling away or sharpest acceleration, compared to 2ltr versions (have owned Golf GTI in past). However, when you take into consideration the fuel economy, load space and roof rail capacity,it all balances out nicely. Interior is bit basic, well built and with all usual useful features. Very happy with this car, will probably buy another when this one needs replacing.
