Can't beat a golf for being safe and sturdy. Never had any problems driving in bad weather

An excellent car. The engine is flexible and quite. Suits my needs very well with sufficient power for most road situations

The Volkswagen Golf is often referred to in the press as "all the car you would want" for general usage and this is very true.Build quality is good but not spectacular, the TSI engine is very flexible and quite economic, available passenger and load space is sufficient for almost all needs. The car is not cheap to buy when compared with other similar vehicles but does not suffer from excess depreciation. The real downside is the service, cost and helpfulness of VW Dealers which is poor compared to say Toyota or Honda dealers. I would buy the same vehicle again, but this is already the second one I have owned so perhaps a change next time.

This is the fourth golf I have owned and am very pleased - particularly with the safety aspects. For example, someone drove into the side of the car - the front passenger side (he was drunk and drove over crossroads on a red light!) and although the car very badly damaged, the side bar kept it from being much worse - I was not affected physically at all. It is also very comfortable and I have no problems seeing, manoeuvring etc. ( I am only 5"3" and sometimes driving other makes of car, have a slight visibility problem).

I find VW's reliable, and the Golf estate does all I require it to do. Petrol consumption can be a little alarming at high speeds, but at a reasonable speed is quite acceptable. The car has all the extras I require, and none of the fiddly bits that always seem to go wrong! I'd go for a VW every time

Car only 5 weeks old, but having had many VW's before I can only say this one is the best. So quiet and comfortable and the standard equipment on the "SE" is unbelievable; you just don't want to get out of it.

This is my third VW Golf so I've had a lot of experience with this car in its MkIV & MkV versions. The build quality is second to none, very few squeaks and rattles even after six years of use and abuse by me. My car lives on the drive and has never failed to start even on the coldest winter morning. The interior is not very exciting, robust with understated quality. It looks just as good now as when I bought it. The 1.9 turbo diesel engine has always been a bit noisy but has plenty of power for lively getaways. Always had it serviced by local authorised dealer, not cheap but gives peace of mind. The only problem I have had in all this time was a ESP failure (a type fault) which my local dealer sorted out. I'm looking to replace the car with another nearly new car and from my extensive search of all the alternative makes, it looks like its going to be another Golf.

My car is a 12 year old 1.6l VW Golf Estate. In this time it has completed over 162,000 miles and despite a few parts needing replacement after ~150k miles, I have had very little trouble. The handling and perfomance of the car is not great, but that is what you would expect of a car of this engine size and set up. I do often wish I had larger engine... The running costs, although not bad, cannot match new cars due to the advances in emissions technology and efficiency (a new Golf GTI has a lower tax band and a better stated mpg despite having more than twice the horsepower). Comfort isn't bad, but after so many miles the seats are not a supportive as they once were. Practicality however is fantastic. I can get three adults, three mountain bikes and kit in the car without need of roof racks. Fold flat rear seats provides you with a decent flat load space. I have moved house a few times, been camping several times and gone to the tip with a boot full of rubbish more times than I care to think. Everytime the car swallowed up everything and didn't complain. I am looking for a new car now due to the age, but it will be a shame to give this car up as it has done everything I could have ever asked of it fantastically.

This is my second golf and hopefully won't be my last

Decent little car and very practical, but uncomfortable for a tall man on a long journey. Don't have anything particularly negative about it. I just don't love it as much as others I've had in the past.

good sturdy reasonable car for its age the main problem now is a few annoying rattles it has developed especially the one behind the dashboard.I would like a later model golf to be my next car

My car feels safe and secure and especially when driving on a motorway. It has enough power for my needs and is able to accelerate fast when necessary. It is a good looking car and the fact there are many proves it is popular and quite rightly so. It appears to be fuel efficient as I am not a high-mileage driver.

I've had a Golf 1.4 tsi for 3 years from new - and it's very very good - for a small family. That said, in the past six months it has started to have a few loose rattles and squeaks - which still don't happen now in my 8 year old VW Touran. It's fast, quiet and fairly comfortable, but lacks space IMO.

A very practical car that is comfortable, quiet and very well put together. All of the controls are perfectly placed and the gearbox has the smoothest change of any car I have owned. I usually change my car every 3 to 4 years but I will take some convincing that any car could be better than my Golf.

Purchased the vehicle on my retirement and after national research discover ex-lease, low mileage 2011 Mk6 vechile. Every bit as good as the Audi A4's I used to drive as a ex-company car driver. June 2014 going to upgrade to Mk7 Golf, BlueMotion, 5 door, hatchback, ex-lease vehicle from Motoerpoint or the VW Financail services BCA auction platform

I love my car as it is so confortable to drive and it feels very sturdy. The only disadvantage is the cost of spare parts and fuel consumption is fairly high

Solid if unspectacular. Shame that the Mk4 were powered with the same engines as the Mk3 Golfs. Due to the advancement in safety the Mk4 is a lot heavier and thus really is quite slow. But if you're not a boy racer this shouldn't matter - and the Golf is really very very comfortable to drive.
